Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How old do I have to be to attend?
A: You need to be entering your senior year in high school or a current college student.

Q: What are food and lodging accommodations?
A: Three meals a day will be provided, and students will reside in one of the campus residence halls, except when on overnight camping trips.

Q: Do I have to attend Paul Smith's College in order to attend?
A: While we would welcome you in joining the Paul Smith's College community, you are not required to do so in order to attend the Woodsmen's School.

Q: Can special dietary needs be met?
A: Yes, with advance notice and coordination, we can work with you to meet dietary needs and requirements.

Q: What equipment will be provided?
A: All equipment needed to participate in the woodmen's school will be provided, including tents and cooking equipment for overnight camping. School sponsors Carhartt and Stihl will provide a T-shirt, logger dungarees and an athlete training kit for each student.

Q: Can I bring my pet?
A: Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate pets.

Q: Will there be an opportunity to go fishing?
A: You may have the opportunity to go fishing during daily free time. If you'd like to fish, please bring your valid New York state fishing license and any equipment you might like to have.

Q: Will sheets and bedding be provided?
A: Sheets and linens will not be provided, however please bring them if you like. This would be in addition to your sleeping bag, which you'll need on overnight camping trips.

Q: Will there be free time?
A: Yes, about two hours each day.

Q: Can/should I bring my cell phone or other personal electronic devices? Will I have computer and internet access?
A: Feel free to bring personal electronics. Please also know that you are responsible for these items should you want to bring them. You will have access to on-campus computers and internet if you like.

Q: What should I pack?
A: Get ready for an Adirondack experience! The weather during July can fluctuate quite a bit. We may have a warm stretch of weather, but normally, we experience some temperature fluctuations and periods of rain. A good bet is to check the long range forecast when it gets close to camp time.

  • Comfortable shoes (soft soled athletic shoes)
  • Work boots or hiking boots (steel toe not necessary)
  • Swimming suit
  • Towels (bathing and swimming)
  • A minimum of two pairs of pants, shorts
  • Ample supply of socks
  • Sweater(s)
  • Sleeping bag and pad and pillow
  • Flashlight
  • Pocket knife
  • Personal care items
  • Bug spray
  • Rain suit
  • Light jacket

Q: Can I bring food? Is there a refrigerator?
A: While food is provided for you, you may bring some snacks if you like. Some limited refrigerator space is available if necessary.
